Welcome to Avoca Hose 1 Company
This web site is a new venture for the Avoca Hose Company No. 1 membership and
will be updated periodically. Since this is a new web site, please
feel free to contact us with any suggesitons you may have or difficulties with
this site at the link at the bottom of each page.
The Avoca Hose Company No. 1 became an operational unit July 13, 1889. The
department enjoys a long tradition of providing fire protection in Avoca
and for the surrounding communities. The Avoca Hose Company No. 1 department
apparatus and equipment have changed drastically through the years. The first
equipment for firefighting was hand-drawn or horse drawn. It was not until 1926
that the department purchased its first mechanized truck, the
Sanford- which is still operational and occassionally taken out for parade
celebrations.
Today standards require that the apparatus and equipment are thoroughly tested
and fully operational for fire and emergency services to meet either NFPA
Standards or OSHA requirments.Avoca Hose Company No. 1 is located in the
Village of Avoca in Steuben County, New York. Avoca Hose Company No. 1 provides
fire and ambulance services for the Town and Village of Avoca, portions of the
towns of Wallace, Howard and Wheeler. Utilizing the census of 2000 statistics,
Avoca Hose Company No. 1 provides fire and emergency services for over 2,314
people orapproximately 873 households, with 607 families residing in the town.
There are 1,001 housing units at an average density of 10.6/km² (27.6/mi²).
Interstate 86 and Interstate 390 pass through the Avoca Fire District.
Avoca Hose Company No. 1 is an all volunteer fire department, with an active
roster of fifty (50) members and a proud history dating to 1899. The members of
the Avoca Hose Compoany No.1 training consists of structural firefighting,
motor vehicle extrication, Hazardous Materials, Emergency medical, wildland
search and rescue, fire origin and cause.
